Brief History
The Noarlunga Little Athletics Centre was established in 1975 at Morphett Vale High School. We moved to our current venue, Knox Park on 9th October 2024 from our previous location at Christies Beach High School, in 2012 after 30 years at Wirreanda High School. We have changed our name to Southern Athletics Centre. Over the years we have had athletes forward their skills to a National level. Notable past athletes include Nigel Smart and Ryan Fitzgerald (AFL Football) and Jagan Hames (representing Australia in Athletics and winning a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games). Many former athletes are keeping traditions going by bringing their own children out.
Our Mission
The mission of the S.A. Little Athletics Association, as a voluntary community based organisation, is to develop children of all abilities by promoting positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle through family and community involvement in athletic related activities.
One of the objectives of Little Athletics is to provide children from the age of 3 with the opportunity to participate in a healthy recreation with their parents - the motto being "FAMILY, FUN & FITNESS". This maxim is emphasised throughout all aspects of competition - from training to championships!
We hope all athletes achieve their best, in an atmosphere of fun, friendship and sportsmanship!
Parental Assistance
Little Athletics is a sport run by parents for their children! Parental assistance is required each week for the smooth running of the program. (see Parental Assistance in General Information) Parents can assist each week in the setting up of the events, being a chaperone for an age group, becoming an official, timing or assisting in the canteen or BBQ. Remember - many hands make light work!
Tiny Tots was included into Little Athletics in 1992 and began at Noarlunga in 2001. Thank you to Melissa and Craig Van Rooy who took the initiative to begin this program at Noarlunga. Through their commitment and work, Tiny Tots has continued to succeed beyond our expectations with often over 40 children participating at one meet.
The fundamental skills of running, jumping and throwing are explored in a number of activities targeted at the age group of 3-5 years. We believe that in introducing the kids to a fun and active approach towards athletics, will benefit them also in their day to day journey through life.
Emphasis is not on competition at this stage as no times or measurements are taken, but on the development of young children and enjoying a family and fun atmosphere.
Tiny Tots will also get to try what the "big kids" are doing, as we will introduce them to some of the events so they can make the transition with a bit more confidence.
At least one adult is required to stay with their child for the entire session which usually lasts about an hour. Parental assistance is a huge necessity as you can imagine, with 40 or so youngsters running around.
Southern Little Athletics Centre is a Not For Profit organisation. We rely on fund raising as well as membership to continue. Throughout the season we have various fund raising opportunities including the Bunning's BBQ, hosting Cross Country and SSAPSASA events.
